Measuring Population, Migration, and TFR

Today in class we mainly talked about three things.  Those things were Measuring Population, Migration, and total fertility rate or TFR for short.  Measuring population has to do with thing called crude birth rate.  Crude birth rate is the number of births per 1000 of the population.  To get the rare of natural increase you have to subtract death from birth rate.  The second thing we talked about was migration.  Net migration is the difference between the number of people entering and leaving a country during a year.  When you enter a county it is called immigration with an I.  When you exit a country it is called emigration with an E. So if you are immigration you are emigrating as well.  There are many reason why people migrate.  These can be things like war, unemployment, health services and freedom.  The last thing we talked about was TFR which is the number go children born per woman.  For the population to stay the same, the TFR has to be a 2.1.

Life Expectancy and Population Growth

Today in class we talked mostly about  Life Expectancy and Population Growth.  Life Expectancy is the average age that something lives.  For example, our country has a Life Expectancy of around 79 years between males and females.  Males tend tom live a less life where as women live a longer life.  Our country isn't that far up there on the charts.  You would think since our country is pretty wealthy and healthy that we would be way up there.  The amount of humans living in the United States are obese is high.  This obviously end to a shorter life besides car crashes and natural disasters and things like that.  Population growth in the world had been getting faster and faster.  It took over 10,000 years to get 1 billion people.  Now it can take on 12 or 13.  This is a very big difference.  It is still going to get faster and faster.

Test Review

Today in class we did our first test review.  When I was doing the test I felt a little sketchy about it and didn't feel like I did to good.  Even though I studied a lot it was a challenge.  I did put in enough effort to get an A.  I knew I got an A because Mr. Schick rings a bell when you get an A before you even receive your test.  I was fairly excited about that since I had an F before.  Today we also reviewed the test because we have a mid semester test that may have some of things from this one.  I got three things wrong.  My parents said they really liked Mr. Schick which was good because I do too.  We also went over what time Mr. Schick went to bed and how early he woke up.  We also looked at a lot of pictures of Stanley and his other dog.

Jobs in Geography

Today we talked mostly about jobs in class.  It was interesting to see everyones ideas and what they want to be as they grow up.  It is crazy because I think about what I want my job to be almost every other day, and I still don't know exactly what to do, but I have a few ideas.  Also all of them are fairly different.  The first thing I has in mind was being a software designer.  This would probably be my first pick out of the rest of my ideas.  I recently did something that I have always wanted to do my whole life.  This was to create an app all by myself.  I gave up many times but I managed to pull it off.  This took me over a year really.  Im not going to lie, it's not the best app ever but its a start.  The second thing I would want to do is start my own business on selling products.  This would be really cool because I would have control over it.  It could be anything from skateboards to trampolines, I don't care, I just thought that would be cool.  If I have knowledge on coding and design then it would be easier to do things online.  The last thing takes little to no knowledge, but it would be awesome.  Having my own breakfast restaurant or coffee shop!  I feel like that would be very fun and not that hard either as long as its successful.

Did You Know 2016

Today in class we reviewed a video called Did You Know 2016.  Im am going to talk about three facts in the video.  The first one I found interesting was that 10 million self-driving cars will be on the road by 2020.  Personally I really dislike this, and I can really see this happening.  I have seen a lot of prototype self-driving cars on the internet from companies like Mercedes to Google.  The reason why I really dislike this is because I think it will take all the fun out of driving cars.  When I am 16 I am really looking forward to driving a car by myself.  Now it did say only 10 million and with that many vehicles.  I'm sure the cars are going to be pricy.  However It will be a lot safer.  Tesla makes cars that turn and drive by themselves on the freeway.  I also think they parallel park by themselves.  Another thing that I saw in the video was that 1 out of 6 couples met online.   I find this really weird.
I personally think dating sites are stupid, especially for young people.  They don't get to know each other enough and sometimes it can be dangerous.  It also extremely easy to just make a fake account and fool people.  I guess I can understand older people using the sites because they don't have as much interaction with other people.  Younger people go to school all the time and can get to know people for up to 4 years.  You could also meet people on Instagram and Facebook from mutual friends and other things like that.  This is a lot better than using dating sites because it is safer because your friends trust that person.  This way is a lot more used by younger people.  I know someone that lives in Santa Monica that has a girlfriend in New York City, and he is my age.  Bach then there was no way this could happen.  The world has changed a whole lot.
The last fact that interested me was something that I actually really like.  It is the fact that 54+ million hours of music are streamed on Spotify every day.  Personally I use Spotify every day around the end of the day.  My sister has a record player in her room.  If I had do that everyday I would dislike music.  The fact that I can just press a button and hundreds of songs can play for hours is amazing.  The one vinyl that my sister had is 10x bigger than my phone.  The tiny mp3s are even smaller.  You can also have as many songs as you want as long as the storage is capable of doing so.  But with Spotify you don't have to download any songs because it is done online.  Although you can save a playlist to your device for long trips in the car.  That was the three facts that I thought was interesting.

Human Geography Test and Video

In class today I first had to finish a test that I couldn't take from last class because I had to play an away game.  The test was about "A Message to Garcia," Vocabulary words, democracies and Socrates the philosopher.  It was fairly hard especially the last question.  When I came back in class we were viewing a video on many things happening in the world.  We were talking about population.  In the United states we have the second most populated country int he world.  We are actually going up in population very slowly.  Around 60 babies in 7 minutes.  Where India is in the 300's per 7 minutes.  We also talked about generation there are 4 generations nowadays.  The generations are silents, boomers, Generations Xers, and us millennials.  Silents used pen and paper, Boomers used phones, generation Xers used email, and we mainly text. It is really cool to see how the generations of work went through.

Today I wasn't in class.  I wasn't in class because we had a soccer game at loyal blakefield.  So I didn't really learn anything in Human Geography today

Human Geography Review

Today in class we reviewed over some things.  First we reviewed democracy.  The first democracy was born in 508 B.C.  We also reviewed Socrates.  Socrates was a big deal back then.  He was very smart and intelligent.  He knew what was wrong and what was right.  He even fought in the Peloponnesian War.  Socrates wasn't like all the other people.  He did what he thought was right and stuck to it.  Sadly Socrates had to come to an end.  He was put on trial.  He was put on trial for two things.  He was put on trial for corruption of Athens youth, and for impiety which means not believing in the gods.  He lost the trail and had to drink poison.  Socrates lived to around 70 years old.  We also learned about what an idiot meant back then.  It meant someone who was characterized by self centeredness and concerned exclusively with private as posed to public affairs.  We also went over a few vocabulary words and that was pretty much it.

Socrates

Today in class we mostly talked about Socrates the Philosopher.  As a young man he worked as a stonemason.  Later, he fought heroically in the Peloponnesian War.  Athens was a great city which attracted brilliant thinkers.  Visitors from all round the world shared their knowledge of astronomy, medicine, meteorology, literature, Philosophy, and all things scientific.  This was often at odds with traditional teachings which centered around the Greek gods, which got young people thinking and questioning.  Later, Socrates was put on trial.  He was charged with two crimes.  The crimes were corruption of Athen's youth, and impiety.  He actually admitted that he did it and said he should actually be rewarded for what he did.  He didn't succeed and he he was put to death.  They killed him by giving him a poison.  What sums this all up is the unexamined life is worth living meaning if you don't know what your goal is in life then its not worth living.

The First Democracy

Today in class we learned a lot.  The most important subject we talked about was the first democracy. The first democracy was born in 502 BCE.  It went a lot differently then we would do know.  They gathered men.  Speakers would stand on top of the agora and give out speeches.  The men were handed two rocks.  One of the rocks was disagree, which was black.  The other rock was white which symbolized  for agreement.  The men would through the rock they wanted to in to a large pot.  They counted up the two different rocks.  Whatever rock was the most popular was what the democracy was going to do.  In class, we talked about social problems today.  Some people would agree and disagree, and some people would have different takes on the problems.  Overall I personally believe that a democracy is a great thing.  Emperors and Pharaohs would just do whatever they thought was right and no one could do anything about it.

Message to Garcia Review

Today in class we learned more about A Message to Garcia. We know that it was published in march 1899.  It was reprinted pamphlet as well as a book.  There where more then 40 million copies sold.  It was also translated into 37 more languages.   A message to Garcia was made into a movie twice.  The setting took place in the Spanish American War.  The second tallest mountain in the the united states was named after him.  The mountain is now changed to what it was named before him.  Now lets talk about Arete.  Arete means excellence in any kind, moral virtue, fulfillment of purpose or function.  Agora is gathering place, assembly, marketplace.  So far a really like human geography class.  It is one of my favorite class in the school.  I also really like the teacher.  I really enjoy being in the class and I wish it would last the whole year.

Mr. Schick Comes Back

Kyle Mikulcik                                                                                                                                 2/6/16
Mr. Schick Comes Back
Today in class are main teacher Mr. Schick came back.  We discussed how to use blogger.  He covered what time we have turn our blog in, when we have to do are blog, what to do when you are not present in class, and how many points each blog is.  We have to publish our blog in by 12:00 at night. We have to do our blog the night we have class.  No matter what we have to do a blog that day. If we are not present in class we still have to do our blog, it's just that we just have to say that we were not in the class due to whatever the cause is.  Each blog is worth only two points.  Although if you add all the days we have to do our blog, two points means a lot.  We also learned that it is better for us to take notes by handwriting instead of typing.  This is because we use less muscles when we write and that causes us to process the information better when writing it.

Message to Garcia

Kyle Mikulcik                                                                                                                               8/30/16
Message to Garcia
This Essay shows hard work by having Rowan work hard to deliver a letter along with obstacles.  He was determined to deliver the letter and so he did.  This represents my life because in my life, and everyones else's,  have obstacles.  Rowan encounters and conquers his obstacles because he needs to reach his goal.  Every human has a goal, wether it is to successful in life or to just get the job you always wanted.  We all want to be the best of ourself.  Bettering ourselves everyday is great because it makes us better and better.  Rowan shows us that if you can work hard, you can accomplish your goals.  In my opinion working hard is the most important thing in life.  If you work hard everyday you will become successful.  This is because you put your life in to what you do.  Therefore hard work applies to my life.  We all need to work hard like Rowan and you will get rewarded.

Message to Garcia and Vocabulary Words

Most of the words have to do with Greece.  In this time Messages were sent by hand.  In message to

Gracia, the book as about delivering the message.  Both the story and the words have to do with the

time period where people deliver messages by hand.  There are also both in times before Christ.  That

is over 2016 years ago.  In Message to Garica, Rowan got an assistant.  The word arete is a sharp

mountain ridge. In message to Gracia, Rowan was at one point near mountains.  Therefore both have

have to do with mountains.

First Day of School

When I heard my alarm clock I thought to myself, "I haven't heard this in a while".  I opened my

eyes and noticed I have my first day of high school.  I wasn't nervous at all I just knew my summer

was over.  I was pretty bummed but it was ok because I knew it wasting to be a good experience.  I

saw a few of my friends on the way to my locker.  My first class was Algebra II.  I really liked the

teacher and she explained everything fairly well so I already knew it was going to a good year.

As I was sitting in class I noticed that we weren't going to be done till around 9:00.  That  means each

class is 55 minutes long.  I'm not used to having classes that long.  In middle school I had classes that

were only 40 minutes long.  Also on the first day of middle school, you have around three half days

before you have a full day.  Here it is just a normal day.
